Sustainable utilization of bio-resources and waste of medicinal and aromatic plants for innovative bioactive products

The research and development activities of the Centre of competence will meet the following needs: • Increase the investment in R amp; D and innovation for effective utilization of the national resources of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) and utilization of agro-bio wastes; • Market-oriented research, in order to enhance innovation capacity; • Investment in modern research infrastructure and equipment. The target groups of the project include researchers from various research institutions, post-docs, PhD and graduate students, farmers, micro, small and medium enterprises and companies from Bulgaria and abroad, with activities in the sectors related to cultivation, processing and utilization of MAPs, state institutions as well as non-profit organizations. Expected results: • Concentration of scientific and financial potential and modern scientific infrastructure in the Centre of Competence for realization of the strategic goal: "Intelligent utilization of Bulgarian biodiversity for economic development and sustainable growth"; • Development of green technologies and approaches for innovative phyto products for medical, cosmetics and food industries; • Encouraging farmers for cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants as a sustainable livelihood. • Preservation of the Bulgarian biodiversity by developing intelligent and friendly approaches for its utilization. • Strengthening the capacity of the Bulgarian companies for development and implementation of innovative competitive products with potential high market demand • Social impact and significance of the project - improving the quality of life by development of innovative products for human health and wellbeing based on natural substances. Main activities: • Organization and project management; • Construction, modernization and equipment of the Centre; • Research amp; Development; • Dissemination of results, publicity and communication; • Knowledge transfer and cooperation with business.
