Today's children - tomorrow's future

The educational problems in Lukovit municipality are reflected in UN Development Program survey on human development index – Lukovit Municipality is ranked 78th among 262 municipalities on the indicator “roma unemployment”, which is a result of the big percent - 35 % illiteracy of roma population. According to the last census 505 municipal inhabitants had never attended school, 248 of which are young up to 35 years old, with primary education are 4466, 1640 of them are aged up to 35. The statistical data shows that during the last 15 years in Bulgaria the percent of school dropouts has dramatically increased among Roma population. As a result the number of illiterate roma adults has increased with more than 60 %. Particularly worrying is the fact that more than 70 % of roma population in Lukovit municipality hasn’t completed basic education, 54 % of which had never attended school or hasn’t completed elementary education. Target Groups: Students of minority from first to the eight grade of Primary School “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”; 5 and 6 years old children of minority, subject to pre-school education; Students' Parents. The project aim is to create conditions for the students of ethnic mijorities for adequate school education and social integration through: - providing equal opportunities to school access; - launching actions to increase students' and parents' motivation for participation in the educational process; - additional activities with students in Bulgarian language to be able to study more successfully; - creating of clubs for extracurricular activities to develop tolerance, initiativity, perservence; - exhange of experience with other educational institutions successfuly worked in the field of roma integration. Results: 100 students and 50 parents included in activities, two sport kamps, 30 sudents additionaly studied Bulgarian language.
