"Education in support of inclusion, diversity and active citizenship”

The project “Education in support of inclusion, diversity and active citizenship”, proposed by the Municipality of Berkovitsa in partnership with “Roma-Berk” Association and the schools from the municipality, is developed in compliance with procedure “Educational integration of students from ethnic minorities and/or those seeking or having received asylum” of OP SEIG 2014-2020. The overall objective of the project is to support students from ethnic minorities to achieve successful social integration. The project will contribute to sustainable results in the educational integration of 100 students from the Roma ethnic minority in the municipality until completion of their secondary education. The project covers a maximum number of Roma students who are subject to compulsory education, transport for the removal of students from segregated on ethnic principle school in the Roma neighborhood and integration into host schools is ensured, as well as support for continuing education. The main activities of the project are aimed at: supplementary training in Bulgarian language for students who do not have it as mother tongue; providing appropriate educational environment for inclusion of Roma students in schools outside the Roma neighbourhood; improving the learning environment in the host schools; activities aimed at preserving and developing the cultural identity of students from ethnic minorities and their peers in a multicultural integration environment. Another group of activities includes encouraging the involvement of parents in the educational process; explaining the benefits of educational integration and acceptance of diversity; work with parents from Roma families who prevent their children from regularly attending school and others. The implementation of the project within 24 months will lead to better conditions for equal access to quality education for students from ethnic minorities and their development as full citizens of Berkovitsa Municipality.
