Development of social skills of children and adolescents from the autistic spectrum and their integration in society.

The non-profit organization “Together for children with autism” (NPO) was found to provide help, care and therapy for children from the autistic spectrum and their families. The activity of the NPO is unique for Bulgaria. We are using proven-effect therapies for autistic people. In Bulgaria, the NPO is probably the only organization applying fully and in its integrity “the Floortime” methodology. Autistic spectrum disorder refers to disabilities regarding people’s communication and social skills. The WHO statistics show that 1 in every 67 children are born/ develop autism, which makes this illness the fastest growing neurological disorder. Without intervention many these people stay dependent for their whole life. Current project proposal is designed to develop the social skills of children and adolescents with autism and their integration in the social life of the community. The main purpose is to seek for opportunities for these individuals to lead an independent life. Therapists will identify and support the development of individual skills and talents of each person, so that this becomes the base for a future professional development. The NPO plans to realize a complete mechanism for teaching and support for autistic children to make them more effective at home, in society as well as at their eventual workplace. The challenges concerned with their integration refer to overcoming their social disabilities that can significantly be improved in time. The capacity of the NPO is below the needs of both target groups. This project would allow the NPO to provide training for therapists, significant number of sessions with children and adolescents, which will open opportunities for active participation in social life and labor market. As a partner, the Municipality of Plovdiv will provide cabinets for the therapeutic sessions, a seminar hall for trainings and part of the management team.
