Increasing citizen participation in the processes of implementation and monitoring of the local zero-waste policy

The issues addressed by the current project proposal are extremely relevant due to the newly emerging regulatory requirements for local government related to the enacted legislative changes of 2021 in the Waste Management Act, the Ordinance on separate collection of biowaste and treatment of biodegradable waste and published results of the reports of the European Environment Agency, which show that the recycling of glass, paper, metal and plastic, but there is no increase in the recycling of biodegradable waste, as Bulgaria is one of the last places in Europe for the use of the energy potential of municipal waste and the recycling of biodegradable waste. It is extremely important for citizens and businesses to be involved right now in active public consultations at national and local level in order to take a proactive part in the processes of formulating new, more reliable and transparent solutions in this state policy. EU waste management policy aims to reduce their impact on the environment and human health, as well as to promote resource efficiency. In the long term, the goal is to make Europe a recycling society that prevents waste and uses unavoidable waste as a resource as much as possible. Individuals, households, businesses, central and local governments should be actively involved in this process. Within the project proposal, the Project Applicant - PSA Association, together with the partner organization - Bolyarovo Municipality, offer an integrated set of activities aimed at improving partnership management with citizens and businesses in the field of biodegradable waste management.
