Improving the accessibility and environment of the iconic central Sofia by increasing the central pedestrian zone

The strategic goals and priorities of this project are related to the desire to improve the quality of life in Sofia and make it a desirable tourist destination by creating new pedestrian zones in the central part of the city. Sofia is one of the capitals in Europe with high levels of air pollution. Among the main pollutants are high emissions from motor vehicles.In order to provide a better living environment in the capital, a partnership will be established between the administration and civil society for the preparation and evaluation of local policies, strategies and plans aimed at ensuring a higher standard of living in Sofia. For the sustainable development of the local economy, tourism, improving the quality of life in the medium and long term, it is necessary to increase the pedestrian zones typical of most European capitals. The increase of the central pedestrian zones will allow for the creation of a secondary center with high added value, a center for arts, crafts, small business development. Ensuring citizen participation in decision-making and implementation of policies aimed at improving competitiveness, quality of life and tourism in Sofia will ensure open and responsible governance, which is one of the objectives of the project and the procedure, which is in the basis for applying the principles of transparency, openness and efficiency of public administration. The project will enable citizen participation in decision-making and policy implementation aimed at improving local policies in the short and long term to increase competitiveness, tourism and quality of life in Sofia. The implementation of this project will provide an opportunity to improve and refine the process of strategic planning and programming for the period 2021-2027, by analyzing the Integrated Plan for Urban Reconstruction and Development 2014-2020.
