LOCAL INITIATIVE FOR REDUCTION OF MARINE LITTER DERIVED FROM ACTIVITIES RELATED TO FISHING PRACTICES IN THE BLACK SEA

“Local initiative for reduction of marine litter derived from activities related to fishing practices in the Black sea” is a project covering a wide range of challenges in the areas of ecological nature concerning the sea water protection and conservation of biodiversity in coastal region. The project proposal will focus on solving specific obstacles related to the cleaning of the Southern Black Sea coast of the Republic of Bulgaria from "ghost" marine litter, including hard and soft plastic waste. The project will start with an extensive survey of the territory and analysis of the available information, then a summary report will be prepared that will include all findings. The project proposal will provide the opportunity to engage Experts from various professional fields who will participate in key activities to achieve the project objectives. Support the project will be provided through voluntary initiatives to encourage involvement of young people in causes related to protection of the environment. An educational campaign will provide opportunity for the concerned parties in the "Fisheries" sector to increase their knowledge towards a more appropriate attitude to the protection of natural resources and conservation of species diversity in the water ecosystems of the South Black Sea coast aquatories. Communication and information campaigns will be essential to achieve the results of the project. They will concentrate on informing the general public by aiming to promote better understanding of important issues and change citizens' attitudes regarding the effects of poaching, the damage caused by illegal, unregulated fishing and boost the use of environmentally friendly fishing gear. In addition, the project and its scope will emphasize on Natura 2000 teritories, which are of particular importance for biodiversity protection and sustainable economic use of the natural heritage in the Bulgarian Black Sea coast region.
