Back to the lutherie and the roots of kailii

Among the connoisseurs of Bulgarian music Kameno is a place known exclusively with the masters of traditional Bulgarian instruments. Two local families have preserved through the centuries the mastery of creating from the tree an object that in the hands of musicians comes to life and brings us to the world of our ancestors - the inner feeling of where Bulgaria resides. Some of the best modern masters of gadulka, kaval and bagpipe, well known in Bulgaria and abroad, live and work in Kameno and the instruments of some of the most popular musicians come from their hands. The crafting of folk instruments is an old and important craft, without which the preservation of the Bulgarian musical traditions is impossible. However, is there anyone who can continue building bagpipes and gadulkas and how this can be encouraged? Those who wish to study folklore performing arts are becoming increasingly difficult to find, which also affects the luthiers and their craft. The demand is diminishing, thus the incentive for the masters to maintain and develop this interesting profession - part of the Bulgarian intangible cultural heritage - disappears. Promoting theses instruments among young people and presenting them through music in different styles, languages and audiences through the use of innovative methods and information technologies is the only way to preserve them. For the purpose of preserving, documenting, presenting and promoting this extremely valuable heritage of the locals, Community Center "Prosveta-1927" envisages renovation of part of its building in Kameno in order to create an exposition and offer a place for exchange in suitable environment, purchasing lighting and sound system; conducting a series of cultural events. The proposed initiative will help to protect the intangible cultural heritage of Kameno, the culture enrichment in the municipality, the creation of new cultural calendar events, as well as its promotion as a unique tourist product.
