Environmental protection, prevention of water pollution and restriction of poaching on the territory of Dospat Municipality

Dospat Municipality is a popular fishing tourism destination. More than two-thirds of tourists visit the area for its fishery resources. When there are no fish, there are no tourists, and poaching is one of the main reasons for the decline in fish populations. The rich fishery resources on the territory attract the interest of a number of poachers who carry out illegal fishing and damage biodiversity. The tourist flow, in addition to the benefits to the local community, brings with it the negatives of the territory. Coastal pollution as a result of waste dumped by tourists is a common phenomenon that has a negative imprint on it's image. The project proposal is aimed at prevention and conservation of fishery resources (fight against poaching) and environmental protection, reducing the number of attacks on fish species / fishery resources in the artificial and natural aquatic ecosystems located in the territory of Dospat Municipality and building an informed and active mass from local volunteer teams through the active participation and involvement of Dospat Municipality, with the support of the structures of the Dospat Hunters and Fishermen Association. The proposal includes training of volunteers, conducting actions related to reducing the pollution of water bodies and reducing and preventing poaching on the territory. Appropriate technical means will be provided - patrol boat, drone, photographic traps, thermal imaging camera, binoculars and others to adequately counteract the offenders. Within the project and after its completion, regular monitoring will be carried out by volunteers of the municipality and the association, which, in cooperation with the responsible institutions, will lead to limitation of water pollution and loss of biodiversity by involving the local community in environmental protection activities on the territory of the FLAG.
