Local communities in support of cultural tourism "The crimson fortress of the Southeast"

Rusokastro Fortress is the most important cultural, historical and tourist site in the Municipality of Kameno. It was built 1,500 years ago at a strategic height - a natural phenomenon that controlled the most important roads in northeastern Thrace - between north and south, from all the eastern passes of the Balkan Mountains and the northern Black Sea coast to the Bosphorus and Constantinople. The origin of the name is from the Latin-Middle Greek root: "roso" - red, purple and "castron" - fortress. With this name the city goes down in history and the grand battle on July 18, 1332, which ended with the victory of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander over the Byzantine army led by Emperor Andronicus. Much earlier at the foot of the hill the Thracians created a settlement. The unique rock has natural bizarre cavities in which the ancients performed sacred rituals. The place is also connected with the popular legend about the girl Rusa, kidnapped by the Dragon, who lived in a cave. Today, the Rusokastro fortress is an archeological monument with a status of "national importance". During the last 6 years the Municipality of Kameno has systematically invested in the development of the site through archaeological research, conservation works, design and construction of tourist infrastructure. This project will continue the efforts of the Municipality to create and promote a comprehensive tourist product "Rusokastro Fortress" through preservation, socialization and presentation of cultural, natural and historical heritage, part of the FLAG Burgas-Kameno. To this end, accessibility for visitors will be improved, the information environment will be supplemented with new signs and digital tools, and sustainability of results will be ensured by mechanization to maintain the environment by on-site workers. The increased tourist flow will create preconditions for additional employment of the local population.
