The European eel is an extremely valuable species and occupies the segment of the most expensive dainty fish products. Until 80 years ago, it was widely distributed in many rivers in Bulgaria, in the basins of the rivers in Southern Bulgaria, flowing into the Aegean Sea (Maritsa, Mesta and Struma). At present, only single specimens are present in Bulgaria. The only way the European eel could reach the table of Bulgarian consumers is its artificial cultivation. The artificial cultivation of the eel is carried out in highly technological complexes for recirculating aquaculture. These technologies minimize the use and loss of water in the process of sustainable production. The meat of the eel contains about 30% of high-quality fats, 15% of proteins, a complex of vitamins and minerals (a big quantity of vitamins A, B1, B2, D and E). Besides being unparalleled in taste, this fish is a source of Omega-3 fatty acids. In order to restore the popularity of the species to both consumers and producers, it is necessary to carry out a promotion campaign both for sustainable fish farming methods and for the high quality and health benefits of eel consumption. The project envisages the preparation of a marketing study on the attitudes of fish farmers and consumers on the production and consumption of European eel, advertising and distribution in Blagoevgrad.
