Development of a marking for the tracking of fishery and aquaculture products in the Black Sea

The European and global tendencies, presented at the World Economic Forum, for fish tracking as a priority in 2020, connected with human rights violations occurring in the supply chain. The project aims to ensure transparency and tractability of fish in order to ensure better control of fish catch and to avoid "losses" or "abuses" that cannot be detected in the process of transport and supply. The project plans development of marking and labeling for tractability of fish caught in the Black Sea and of fish products. The project idea is inspired by the so-called fish route from “the sea” to “the fork”, or the more precise tracking of the catch of fish when its location changes from one place to another, for example from the port to the storehouses or processing sites, and finally to the trade network. Initially, a research on the possibility of using marking and labeling connected with fish and fish products tractability in the Black Sea will be conducted. The aim is to identify the possibilities of using appropriate marking of the fish catch, taking into account the specific characteristics – the kind of fish, place of catch, method of catch, season of catch, etc. After the research, we will proceed with designing the marking – the labels and their printing. The scope of the marking for tracing will be from the time of unloading of the fish caught by the fisherman till it reaches direct consumers, as well as its transportation, storage and supply in the trade chains. An important part of the project are the information campaigns for informing all stakeholders about the benefits of the marking and labeling – fishermen, processors, traders, end users, representatives of the State and local authorities. For ensuring the sustainability of the project, a tool will be designed for online monitoring and tracing of the labels, respectively the catch.
