Acquisition of knowledge about Varna Lake environment

This project supports the implementation of measures for improving the state of the marine environment and in direct support to the "blue growth" in the Varna Lake region. The project objectives are related to the creation of resources, scientific knowledge, recommendations for actions and good practices that would help to improve the status of Varna Lake and the services that the lake offers to businesses and citizens in the Varna region. For that purpose we defined a work program for the implementation of the project, lasting 21 months. The work program includes a total of two research activities (Actions 1 and 2), one project management activity (Activity 3) and one project dissemination activity (Activity 4) to the interested consumer groups. Specifically, Activity 16: Hydrography, Chemical and Structural Analysis for Selected Areas in Varna Lake (Zone 1 and Zone 2) with a duration of 16 months is aimed at creating resources (including maps with information on the structure of the lake bottom, pollution of silt and water with heavy metals and petroleum products, etc.). These resources are needed both to assess the current state of the aquatic environment and the bottom and to conduct research related to the analysis, interpretation of the data and the study of different scenarios for the development of the situation in Varna Lake. In this way, the information gathered from the implementation of Action 1 (in Zone 1 and Zone 2) will be provided as a basis for conducting in-depth research and analysis in Activity 2: Developing a base of scientific knowledge and good practice to support activities related to improving the state of the marine environment, which lasts for 21 months. The information available from various publicly available sources, scientific knowledge and models will be gradually consolidated, which will subsequently be specified and refined with the help of data collected from Zone 1 and Zone 2.
