Modernization of the Sofia - Plovdiv railway line: railway section Elin Pelin - Kostenets

The aim of the project is modernization of railway infrastructure in accordance with the requirements to the railway infrastructure of the core TEN-T network. The implementation of the project will contribute to the development of the Orient/East Med corridor, passing through Bulgaria, part of which is the railway line Sofia - Elin Pelin - Kostenets - Septemvri - Plovdiv. The start and end points of the modernization of the railway section Elin Pelin - Kostenets is km 22+554 to km 73+598. The project includes the following main project components: - Modernization of approximately 51.044 km double track railway line for speed 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight, and full implementation of the TSI requirements; - Construction of 36,5 km double track railway line; - Renewal of 14.544 km double track railway line; - Enlargement of platforms at the stations and construction of pedestrian overpasses, including provision of accessible environment for disabled people; - Reconstruction of stations Elin Pelin and Ihtiman; - Construction of new halts Pobit Kamak, Vakarel south (post) and Verinsko; - Reconstruction of platforms at 2 existing halts – Stambolovo and Nemirovo; - Closure of 4 existing level crossings and replacement with 5 new road overpasses; - Renewal and new construction of 24 bridges and viaducts; - Construction of single rail track tunnels with total length of the two tubes of 15,4 km; - Construction of 8 double track single tube tunnels with 5,48 km total length; - Construction of new Overhead power Line 50 Hz, 25 kV; - Building of 2 new traction sub-stations and 2 new section post; - Installation of 3 computer interlocking systems at Elin Pelin station, Vakarel south (post) and Ihtiman station.
