Development and implementation of intelligent transport system within the "Trakia" highway

The concept of the project proposal is directly related to improving the safety of movement of vehicles within the scope of Trakia motorway, observing the latest EU directives in this area. The implementation of intelligent transport system provides for the modernization of defined road structures located along Trakia motorway and implementation of specific road accessories, in order to ensure maximal security of the movement of vehicles and increase road safety. By introducing an intelligent transport system for automatic identification of accidents in tunnels and use of ITS equipment it is expected to increase road safety and meet the requirements as laid down in Directive № 2004/54/EC. Within the project an intelligent transport system should be developed and put into operation in the scope of Trakia motorway, including various hardware components and software for centralized monitoring, control and management of traffic within the motorway. The system should be integrated with the existing traffic information systems in RIA as far as possible and applicable. The main activities that are planned to be implemented are as follows: - Implementation of intelligent system for automatic incidents detection, traffic management and modernization of the Trayanovi vrata tunnel - Supply and installation of variable message signs in different sections of Trakia motorway with possibility for real-time remote control; - Supply and installation of vehicle weight-in motion sensors; - Supply and installation of cameras for measurement of average speed and traffic monitoring with complete equipment at defined sections of Trakia motorway. It is envisaged that all activities for the project should be completed within 36 months from the conclusion of a contract for the provision of grants between RIA and the MA of OPTTI.
