Design and construction of a composting installation for green biodegradable waste in municipality Berkovitsa and municipality Varshets

The overall goal of the Project is to reduce the quantity of disposed biodegradable waste generated in Municipality Berkovitsa and Municipality Varshets through separate collection and composting of green biodegradable waste. This goal is compliant with the waste management hierarchy and the EU and national objectives for reducing the quantity of biodegradable waste going to landfills. The project contributes also to improving resource efficiency as the infrastructure built under the project will turn the waste into a useful product – compost. The specific objective of the Project is to ensure the needed infrastructure for separate collection and recovery of green wastes in the municipalities. A composting installation with a capacity 3696 t/y will be constructed that will be located on the territory of municipality Berkovitsa. The composting installation constructed and put into operation under the project will recover separate collected green biodegradable waste from the settlements on the territory of the two municipalities and will produce high quality compost. Equipment for introduction of a new municipal service on separate collection of green waste will be ensured. The social and economic effects from the implementation of the project consists in improved quality of the environment by reducing hazardous emissions related to waste disposal in Waste Management Region Montana; provision of a new waste management service for the citizen and business in the municipalities and provision of high quality compost. New jobs will be created for the operation of the infrastructure built under the project.
