“Zero Waste - Introducing Good Practices for Municipal Waste Prevention through Composting and Creation of a Public Environmental Center ”

Project Proposal “Zero Waste - Introducing Good Practices for Municipal Waste Prevention through Composting and Creation of a Public Environmental Center ” under Procedure No. BG16M1OR002-2.009 targets the nurturing of a zero waste society by raising public awareness on adherence to the waste hierarchy and reducing the amount of MSW deposited. The demonstration project will be implemented on the territory of Sarnitsa Municipality. The project envisages the creation of an Environmental Center for raising awareness and the formation of a zero-waste society. Through a targeted programme home composting containers will be distributed to 150 households in the municipality, with participants going through specialized training to carry out composting activities and proper usage of the containers. The measure implemented aims at reducing the amount of biodegradable waste provided for disposal in accordance with the national strategic plan. In order to reach the wider population of Sarnitsa, three successive 'Waste is a Resource' campaigns will be conducted. Both pupils and their families will be able to participate and give new life to waste. These activities will be part of a comprehensive waste prevention program that Sarnitsa will develop within the demonstration project with defined short, medium and long-term goals, methodology and timeline for implementation and subsequent monitoring in order to achieve sustainability and provide replication opportunities for other stakeholders. In addition to supporting the goals set out in Art. 31, para 1 of the Waste Management Law for reducing MSW, after its completion the demonstration project aims to expand within the Regional Waste Management Association of Dospat with 5 municipal members, including Sarnitsa.
