Pilot project for the implementation of a school demonstration project for composting in Mezdra

This demonstration project will undertake a number of innovative management approaches in the municipality of Mezdra (Bulgaria) with the goal of stimulating the prevention, separate collection and treatment of biodegradable municipal waste in Mezdra. The focus of the project is biodegradable waste, as currently in Mezdra there is no system for the separate collection or treatment for this waste stream. Additionally, bio-waste currently accounts for approximately 25% of all municipal waste in Mezdra. The project measures, designed to tackled the bio-waste stream, include the development of a Municipal Action Plan for Zero Municipal Waste, which will contain an array of practical measures which have a direct positive effect with regards to waste management. The measures will be designed in a way that they can easily be implemented in practice and replicated, and each of them will include the possible funding mechanisms for it. The Action Plan will target different municipal waste streams and will use the waste hierarchy as guidance for the choice of measures. One of the measures will be piloted in two schools in the municipality of Mezdra. The measure which will be piloted is based on the good practice of the city of Brno. It includes the installation of compost bins in the schools, the development of training materials, workshops and games for students from the 1st to 8th grade to stimulate composting in school and environmentally conscious behavior in students and their parents and family. As part of the project, various campaigns will be adopted in order to disseminate project results, including: presenting the Action Plan at an international conference, student campaigns, public events and online media campaigns. As the project is based on a successful good practice, it is expected that it will help reach the local and national goals of diverting at least 50% of municipal waste away from landfill by 2020.
