Demonstration project for preparation for reuse and recycling of used mattresses

This project envisages establishment of site/installation for receiving, preparation for reuse and recycling of household waste and similar with EWC 200307 - Bulky waste, meaning USED MATTRESSES. The project is based on good practice cases from successfully implemented projects in EU countries such as the Netherlands, France, UK and Scotland. The installation will be located in the village of Petarch, Kostinbrod municipality, Sofia region and is intended to cover the specific waste stream with the above characteristics generated by the Sofia Municipality and the Southwest Planning Region. The estimated population to be covered by the project represents 30% of the country's population in 2018 (2 105 300 inhabitants in the South-West region, compared to 7 025 037 inhabitants in Bulgaria). Due to the presence of large tourist centers in the area, generating an additional amount of waste from the specific waste stream os used mattresses, the equivalent inhabitants in the area are calculated with an average of 1.2, i.e. the population covered is 2 526 360. At present, in Bulgaria generally, activities in preparation for reuse or recycling of used mattresses do not exist. The annual production of bed mattresses in Bulgaria is equal to about 350,000 pieces per year and in addition there are imports within 150,000 pieces per year. Average about 70% of this amount is a replacement of mattresses already used. The project plans that the full capacity of the recycling potential of used mattresses (30 thousand pieces per year) will be reached within the project lifetime (5 years), starting from 8-10 thousand pieces during the first year. Having in mind an average weight of one 25kg mattress and 80-85% recovery level of recyclable fractions, this would mean turning aside 200-250 tones of bulky waste from landfills, more than 50% of which are fractions relevant to the WMA objectives of art. 31, para 1 and para 2.
