Introducing of a model for management of household bulky waste on the territory of Burgas Municipality

Burgas Municipality is a part of the regional waste management system serving the municipalities of Aytos, Burgas, Kameno, Karnobat, Nessebar, Pomorie, Ruen, Sredets and Sungurlare. In Burgas municipality separate collection of recycable and biodegradable waste, construction and hazardous waste from the population is carried out. Separate collection systems are in operation: underground containers for separate collection of municipal waste; a network of mobile centers for separate collection of household waste; free transportation of bulky and construction waste from domestic repair works. Through the implementation of the current project, existing services on the territory of the municipality will be upgraded by introducing good practices from other European cities for preventing the generation and preparation for reuse of municipal waste. Main activities: study of the population’s attitudes and needs for separate waste collection (preparatory activity); construction and operation of a Center for repair and reuse of used furniture; developing an information platform and conducting a campaign to disseminate project results to the general public. The demonstration activity included in the project proposal consists of introduction of a model for preparation for re-use of bulky household waste, specifically prepared for disposal household furniture. It is combined with a targeted campaign and development of a information platform named “Guide for separated collection of household waste” that will encourage and motivate to prevention and separate collection of waste in everyday life. The project activities relate to the highest priority order in the waste hierarchy, namely waste prevention and preparation for reuse. Their implementation is a contribution to the achievement of the goals set out in Art. 31 (1) of the Waste Management Act regarding municipal waste.
