Test Implementation of Good Practices on Approaches to the Collection and Recycling of Textile Waste

This project proposal foresees the implementation of a waste management demonstration project in the municipality of Zlataritsa, Veliko Turnovo District, with a leading partner, El Zet Varna, Ltd. The measures envisaged deal with the separate collection and recycling of textile waste, as well as a public campaign to promote it. The project is based on good practices for separate collection by the municipality of Albano Laziale (Italy) and on textile waste mechanical recycling approach implemented on the territory of Barcelona, Spain. Data from the reports developed and morphology in Municipality of Zlataritsa show that textile waste is about 2.08% of the total amount of municipal waste generated. At present, there is no municipal waste treatment system for textile waste on the territory of the municipality; they are not included in the regional system. The lack of adequate infrastructure for the separate collection and recovery for this type of waste by the population leads to the inability to meet the requirements of national and European waste management legislation (Directive 2008/98), incl. and following the EU circular economy package. This project proposal provides for the implementation of separate collection measures over a 12-month period of approximately 11.26 tonnes waste of textiles, as well as their subsequent recovery / recycling through a recycling facility. The planned campaign to promote the results of the project is aimed at the general public with a focus on the younger generation, including the institutions and structures involved in the field of waste management. The measures envisaged are aimed at raising public awareness of compliance with the municipal waste management hierarchy, which will contribute to the transition to a circular economy and provide conditions for the formation of a zero-waste society in line with the objectives of the procedure. The eligible cost of the project amounts to 390 900 BGN for 18 months.
