Implementation of priority measures at Ramsar site Belene Islands Complex, Persina Nature Park

This project envisages the implementation of activities set out in measures of the NPAF, which will improve the conservation status of the Ramsar site Belene Islands Complex within the boundaries of Persina Nature Park. Here are located some of the most important wetlands in Bulgaria - Persin Island and Kaykusha marsh, with their typical habitats related to water and wetlands, as well as some of the rarest habitats in Bulgaria of sand formations and xerophytic vegetation. The project proposal falls within the following NATURA zones: Komplex Belenski ostrovi, Svishtovsko-Belenska Nizina, Persina. Through the implementation of activities for the modernization and automation of the mechanical system for opening and closing the gateways of the facilities on Persin Island, by building a hydraulic system to drive each of a total of six gates and upgrading the system for monitoring of the water level with three new points, the water regime in the wetland, the safety, efficiency and quality of its management will be improved. The activities of reed and Amorpha mowing will contribute to the improvement of the conservation status of the habitat 3150 Natural eutrophic lakes with vegetation of the type Magnopotion or Magnopamion and habitat 2340* Pannonian inland dunes. As a result from reed mowing activities in Kaikusha marsh, is expected to be created conditions for the formation of water mirrors suitable for the development of ichthyofauna and an attractive place for waterfowl. The water regime improvement and the opening of water mirrors, will contribute to the improvement of status of habitat Natural Eutrophic Lakes with Magnopotamion or Hydrocharition vegetation, but also to the improvement of nature conservation status of the three target species: Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant and the Ferruginous Duck.
