Improving the conservation status of the Great Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) (Linnaeus, 1758) in Bulgaria, through applying comprehensive measures in key Natura 1000 habitats.

The project proposal covers activities aimed at improving the status of the Great Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), while implementing the Action Plan for Protection of the Great Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) in Bulgaria 2014 - 2023, approved by Order RD-347 / 12.05. 2014 of the Minister of Environment and Water. The activities correspond to Annex No.1 "Species Action Plans and Eligible Measures" to the Guidelines for Application to Procedure No BG16M1OP002-3.016 "Measures to Improve the Conservation Status of Birds" and the following Conservation Activities outlined in the plan: 8.2.1 To improve habitats in Orsoy marsh and Garvan marsh; 8.2.4 To improve the feeding base, while studying in advance what is the most appropriate fish breeding material to use as the food for the relevant wetlands; 8.1.4 To elaborate and apply measures for extensive fish breeding, reflecting the necessary economic activities in fish breeding farms, in compliance with the requirements of the Great Bittern to Habitats; 8.2.5. To secure dangerous electric transmission networks. As a result of the measures under the procedure, it is expected to improve the conservation status of the species, subject to protection under NATURA 2000 network. The activities will be carried out in the territory of protected areas: BG0002006 Ribavitsi Orsoya, BG0002064 Garvansko blato, BG0002030 Complex kalimok, BG0002001 Rayanovtsi (Karst complex Dragoman marsh), SPAs where the bird species is subject to protection, with existing fish breeding farms and spas where the bird species is subject to protection - breeding.
