Development of Action plan for the conservation of colonial-nesting waterbirds (heron, ibisses, partincoles, avocets and terns): A. purpurea, A. ralloides, E. alba, E. garzetta, N. nycticorax, P. leucorodia, P. falcinellus, R. avosetta, G. pratincola, Ch. hybrida, Ch. niger, G. nilotica, S. hirundo, S. sandvicensis, S. albifrons, L. melanocephalus for the period 2019 – 2028

The project proposal is based on developing an Action Plan for conservation of the population of colonial-nesting waterbirds (herons and ibises, avocets and terns) in Bulgaria by identifying restorative, supportive and other nature conservation measures for the species and their colonies, according to their type and habitats. SO 1: Providing up-to-date, high quality and sufficient for the purpose of developing an Action Plan data for the colonial-nesting waterbirds in Bulgaria. SO2: Identifying the threats and limiting factors for the colonial-nesting waterbirds, subject to the Plan, whose impact should be controlled, overcome or limited. SO3: Providing appropriate long-term planning base for the conservation of the population of waterbirds, subject to the Plan and their colonies, by provision of adequate nature conservation measures, according to their type and habitats in Bulgaria. 12 activities are planned to ensure management and coordination of the project; accordance with the approved Assignment for the development of the Action Plan; transparency; better understanding from directly interested stakeholders. The project proposal forsees field studies in three „lines“, which cover best the nesting sites of the target species, as follows: 1. Along the Danube river - Orsoya fishponds, Belene island, Kalimok-Brashlen, Malak Preslavets, Srebarna; 2.Along the Maritsa river and surrounding fishponds, Tsalapitsa rise-fields, Hadzhidimitrovo fishponds, larger dams; 3. Black sea coastline – Durankulak lake, Shabla lake and tuzla, Pomorie lake, Atanasovsko lake, Burgas lakes, protected area Poda, the estuary of Ropotamo river. They fall within the following Natura 2000 sites: Orsoya; Ribarnitsi Orsoya; Persina; Complex Kalimok; Blato Malak Preslavets; Srebarna; Orizistha Tsalapitsa; Durankulashko ezero; Shablenski ezeren complex; Pomoriysko ezero; Atanasovsko ezero; Complex Ropotamo; Mandra-Poda, etc. The expected result is: Endorsed Action Plan.
