Development of Action plan for the conservation of Leopard Snake (Zamenis situla, Linnaeus, 1758) in Bulgaria for the period 2019 – 2028

The project proposal is based on developing an Action Plan for conservation of the population of Leopard Snake in Bulgaria for ten-year period. The main objective is Improving the conservation status of the Leopard Snake in Bulgaria by identifying the necessary restorative, supportive and other nature conservation measures for the conservation of its population. Specific objective 1 is Providing approved by The Minister of Environment and Water Assignement for developing of Action Plan for conservation of the population of Leopard Snake (Zamenis situla (Linnaeus, 1758)) in Bulgaria. Specific objective 2 is Providing up-to date, high quality and sufficient for the purpose of developing an Action Plan data for the Leopard Snake in Bulgaria. Specific objective 3 is Providing appropriate long-term planning base for the conservation of the population of Leopard Snake in Bulgaria. 8 activities are planned to ensure management and coordination of the project; preparation of approved Assignment for the development of the Action Plan; transparency; better understanding; receiving feedback from directly interested stakeholders on the implementation of the Action Plan and from the general public, in terms of the quality of work and reaching agreement on the draft Action Plan. The project proposal foresees field studies to be done on the territory of Blagoevgrad, Plovdiv and Burgas districts. Target areas will be specified based on literary and related data for the actual or potential presence of the species (for example within the following Natura 2000 protected sites: BG0000224 „Ograzhden-Malashevo“, BG0001028 „Sreden Pirin-Alibotush“, BG0001031 „Rodopi-Sredni“, BG0001004 „Emine-Irakli“, etc. where the species has not yet been proven or where has been found a long time ago). The expected result is: Endorsed Action Plan for conservation of the population of Leopard Snake in Bulgaria.
