Improving the conservation status of birds in the protected area BG0002052 Yazovir Zhrebchevo

Zhrebchevo Dam is a wetland of international importance for wintering waterfowl, where every year more than 20,000 waterfowl of 33 species are concentrated. 77 species of birds have been identified in the dam and fishponds, mainly wintering in the area, of which 23 species are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria. Of the species found, 62 are of European conservation importance (SPEC) (BirdLife International, 2004). As globally endangered in category SPEC1 are included 3 species, and as endangered in Europe respectively in category SPEC2 - 5 species, in SPEC3 - 18 species. The site provides suitable habitats for 20 species listed in Annex 2 of the Biodiversity Act, for which special protection measures are required. Of these, 16 are also listed in Annex I to EU Directive 79/409. The dam together with the fishponds are of international importance for the Eurasian teal / Anas crecca /, The mallard /Anas platyrhynchos/, Greater white-fronted goose / Anser albifrons / and The great egret / Egretta alba /. Here is one of the few places in Bulgaria where the endangered Red-breasted goose / Branta ruficollis / winters in the interior of the country far from the Black Sea coast. The White-tailed eagle / Haliaeetus albicilla / regularly stays in the area during the winter. During the nesting period, the place is one of the most important in the country of importance for the European Union for the protection of The western marsh harrier / Circus aeruginosus /. This project proposal envisages implementation of 3 measures from the management plan for protected area BG0002052 Zhrebchevo Dam, identified as a priority (eligible) in the guidelines for application under procedure BG16M1OP002-3.027: 1. Construction of pile platforms for rest and nesting in suitable reed massifs. 2. Placement of artificial nests for large birds of prey in suitable places in the protected area and in the vicinity - up to 2 km distance. 3. Installation of nests for ducks.
