Building, restoration and renovation of public areas in the city centre of Sofia

The project aims to perform integrated measures for improvement of urban environment as part of the Integrated Plan for Urban Reconstruction and Development (IPURDS). The areas subjected to the project are located within area with public functions with high social importance designated by IPURDS as "O1 Center" and part of the Investment Programme of Sofia Municipality. The territories are characterized by highly depreciated infrastructure, slightly functional, with violated environment, cluttered with various urban design elements and numerous conflict points between pedestrians and vehicles. To ensure the comfort and security innovative approaches related to the pavements’ type and space usage are needed. The project prioritizes the public spaces over cars, which is one of the objectives of the Vision set in IPURDS. A better quality of urban design ensures sense of comfort and city wealth. Quality of green areas, pavements and elements of urban furnishing are essential. Pedestrian zones and routes located within the central part were assessed in the overall context of the city, along with their impact on public life, social interaction and environment quality. As a result, it was concluded that the city has huge potential which can be developed notably through integrated approach. Therefore the project is focused on reconstructions, achievement of aesthetic and modernized areas, provision of accessible environment and shared spaces. The project will contribute to improve quality of life, access to basic services, qualitative ecological environment and development of the area. The project is dedicated to satisfy the needs of the target groups - the population of the city and the district of Sofia, visitors and tourists. It will lead to increased investment attractiveness and balanced economic development of the city and the region and finally it will have a positive social effect.
