Integrated Model for Urban Mobility Management - phase 1

The Integrated Model for Urban Mobility Management - phase 1 project aims at creating suitable environment for sustainable multi modal urban mobility which supports the low-carbon strategies for development of the city. By implementation of measures and investments in transport infrastructure, the project contributes to achieving the following specific goals: - improvement of mobility by introduction of adjustable traffic control and alternatives for traveling in urban environment; - improvement of quality and access to services related to urban transport; - increasing the safety of the road network and the traffic conditions. The project consists of two main components: - Upgrade of the BRT system of the city by reconstruction and rehabilitation of major transport streets and introduction of a "fast bus corridor" along the Demokratsia street, together with new traffic organization and optimization of parking; - Introduction of Integrated traffic management system, including automated traffic lights management, traffic detection and video-surveillance at key locations of the city. The project activities will help for: supporting modality at city level, improvement of speed and quality of urban transport and sustainable change of modal split; improvement of the safety in urban environment; improvement of traffic lights control and providing priority for urban transport at junctions; improvement of accessibility of transport infrastructure, including measures for disabled people. The project builds upon other initiatives of Burgas Municipality, such as the Integrated Urban Transport for Burgas project, funded by the Operational programme "Regional Development", the municipal parking management system; low speed zones, the city bike sharing system and network of bike-lanes, the policies for enlarging and modernization of the pedestrian zones.
