Sofia Integrated Urban Transport - II stage

The project “Sofia Integrated Urban Transport - II stage” builds upon the results achieved by the implementation of the project “Sofia Integrated Urban Transport Project” OPRD 2007 - 2013 and all other projects and programs implemented to date in Sofia. The current project will contribute to the improvement of the PT services in the capital in accordance with the vision and priorities for the development of the city and its overall strategy for the establishment of an integrated sustainable urban transport. The project consists essentially of 4 major components identified in the Feasibility Study (FS) that was carried out and the implementation of the related activities: 1. Comp. 3 of the FS: Reconstruction of the tramway track along "Kamenodelska" str. - from the crossroad of "K. Stoilov" blvd. to "Orlandovtsi" loop; 2. Comp. 5 of FS: Reconstruction of the tramway track along Tsar Boris III blvd. - from Knyazhevo loop to Sofia Courthouse loop, without the sections of "Russian monument" sqr. and the crossroad of Tsar Boris III" and "G . Delchev blvd.: - Reconstr. of tramway track Part A: Tsar Boris III blvd. from Russian monument sqr. to Knyazhevo loop; - Reconstr. of tramway track Part B: Macedonia blvd. and Alabin str. from Russian monument sqr. to Sofia Courthouse loop. 3. Comp. 6 of FS: Purchase of new low-floor articulated trams. 4. Comp. 7 of FS: Upgrading of Intelligent traffic management and the existing real time passenger information systems. The components have been selected and elaborated after conducting a detailed FS on the various options and a cost benefit analysis, which have proven the appr. of this project and the sustainability of the results. The project addresses key issues in the field of transport related to the increase in traffic and usage of cars, pollution, safety and accessibility. The environmental aspects of the project have also been considered as one of its main objectives is to contribute to the environmental protection.
