"Improvement of road safety of state road network"

The present project integrates an approach, which recognizes that people make mistakes and may be involved in road accidents, but the aim should be to develop infrastructure that is suitable to mitigate unwanted serious consequences. Road accidents occur as a result of a complex series of events and a combination of circumstances, including human error - an element that cannot be completely eliminated. The beneficial effect on the road safety, however, is a possible process. In this sense, the project aims to contribute to increasing safety of national road network, reducing the risk of accidents and trauma. The intervention envisages the implementation of road safety measures on state roads by providing intelligent transport systems (ITS), horizontal marking and vertical signs. The measures will be implemented in critical sections of national roads, determined after a need-based analysis, carried out on the basis of data on road accidents, traffic load and specific climatic conditions. As a result, investments in 11 priority road sections groped in 5 road directions will be made. Thus, road infrastructure included in the project will be developed as more suitable to prevent the occurrence of road accidents with fatalities and serious injuries; will integrate elements of road transport system that interact and are sufficiently adaptable to ensure safety; will contribute to the adequate behavior of road users and will compensate for human errors as they may occur. The effect of the project is related to reducing the number and severity of road accidents, reducing fuel consumption and harmful emissions, reducing travel time, improving travel comfort.
