“Enhancing the resource efficiency at DIO Ltd. through implementing process innovation for production of ophthalmic lenses“

The project’s overall aim is to enhance the resource efficiency at DIO Ltd. through implementing a process innovation, which is the first of its kind for Bulgaria, based on overall quality management in production processes. To achieve this aim, the project “Enhancing the resource efficiency at DIO Ltd. through implementing process innovation for production of ophthalmic lenses“ will comprise the following activities: -Resource efficiency audit -Enhancing resource efficiency in production by acquiring equipment resulting in a decrease in the raw materials and auxiliary materials used and in improved waste management efficiency -Creating prerequisites for recycling paper and paper and cardboard packaging waste -Reducing the fresh water used in production -Providing engineering and technical consulting services to support the implementation -Dissemination and multiplication of project results These activities will lead to the following results: -Performed resource audit proving the efficiency of the planned resource efficiency measures; -Acquisition of high-tech resource-efficient equipment; -Implemented pilot technology in Bulgaria for the production of spectacle lenses; -Increased production capacity; -13,6% average reduction of the raw materials used in the production of lenses as compared to 2016; -Reduced use of hazardous chemical substances by 10.63% as compared to 2016; -Improved efficiency of management of generated waste as per the hierarchy in Art. 6 of the Waste Management Act by replacing “neutralization” by “prevention” and “neutralization” by “recycling”; -32% reduction in water use in lens production as compared to 2016; -Higher rationality of resource use in view of environmental protection; -Enhanced resource efficiency and product quality. In view of the positive outcomes described, the project will serve as base for enhancing the competitiveness of DIO Ltd. on the Bulgarian and international markets.
