Support for asylum seekers in Bulgaria

Within the framework of this project IOM will provide social, administrative, legal and psychological support to asylum seekers in the initial adaptation phase, including identification of persons in vulnerable situation and referral to social services/ specialized care according to their needs. Special focus of the project will be further strengthening of the safety zones for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) that were established by IOM Bulgaria as part of previous projects funded under the European Union’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2014-2020 Emergency measures. The support will be provided by IOM's expert team that include among others: psychologists, social workers, legal counsellors and a cultural mediators/interpreters who will provide assistance to asylum seekers accommodated within the reception system run by the State Agency for Refugees (SAR) in Sofia, Harmanli, Pastrogor and at the project office in Sofia for beneficiaries living at external addresses. The two safety zones for UASC in RRC Sofia - Ovcha Kupel and RRC Sofia - Voenna Rampa will be provided by comprehensive support for their functioning, including security and 24/7 H social care for the accommodated children. The expected number of beneficiaries to be supported through these measures for the project duration is 1000 persons. The expected number of UASC who will be provided with administrative, social, legal and psychological assistance and daily support in the two safety zones is 300 persons. The project will thereby provide comprehensive support to asylum seekers and care, support, and safety for UASC in Bulgaria.
