Implementation of marine waste reduction measures in the Bay of Burgas

The project proposal is justified by the conclusions drawn from the initial assessment of the status of marine environment at the territory of Bulgarian Black Sea, identifying the following marine waste: plastic, metal, rubber, etc. These conclusions are confirmed by the results of implemented projects of Burgas Municipality "RedMarLitter" and MARLEN, which show that almost 90% of the floating waste in the sea waters are objects made of polymers with anthropogenic origin. Also, the monitoring of the beaches shows that about 90% of all waste falls into the category "Artificial polymeric materials". The main activities are related to the implementation of initiatives and campaigns for reduction of marine waste caused by human resources in the Bay of Burgas and activities for raising awareness, knowledge and education of experts and students about the causes of pollution, consequences and ways of prevention. The purpose of the project proposal is to improve the ecological status of marine waters in the Bay of Burgas and to increase public awareness, self-awareness and responsibility of citizens for reduction and prevention measures of marine litter. Target groups: Local administration and structures relevant to the marine environment and waste management, fisheries community, students, general public. Outcome: The activities foreseen will contribute to the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and complement the measures foreseen in the Marine Strategy of Bulgaria, in particular Descriptor 10. This project proposal is in line with the European Community's marine environment policies. maintaining or achieving good status. The expected outputs are: Reduction the amount of waste in the Bay of Burgas through initiatives for cleaning of marine environment in Burgas Bay. Conducted educational and awareness - raising campaigns aiming the prevention and reduction of waste in the marine environment.
