The project will renew and expand the equipment of five of the regional forensic laboratories – Sofia Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, District Directorate of the Ministry of Interior in Plovdiv, Burgas, Varna and Pleven. The technical equipment of these forensic laboratories is too heterogeneous, obsolete and insufficient. The upgrade of the equipment will lead to unification of the equipment and consequently standardization of the quality of the laboratory examinations. The new equipment will expand the scope of their expert examinations. Conditions will be created to start the accreditation process of the laboratories. At the moment only RIFS conducts examinations of synthetic drugs and digital evidence. This leads to a great amount of the assigned tasks to RIFS and respectively to extension of the deadlines for their execution. Within the project equipment in the field of physical and chemical examinations, biology, handwriting and document examinations, fingerprinting and digital technologies will be procured. Trainings for the experts of the institute and the regional laboratories on the aforementioned fields of examinations will be conducted. A “Handbook on Forensic Science” will be written and published and it will encompass the forensic examinations and used methods applied in Bulgaria. The target group consists of employees of RIFS and the regional forensic laboratories. The main aim is increasing the capacity of the forensic examinations in Bulgaria for an exact and comprehensive evaluation of the material evidence and material evidential means. The planned trainings will lead to increasing the qualifications of the expert staff. The expected result is to improve the capacity of the investigating and law-enforcement authorities. The specific result is to expand the capacity of the laboratory forensic examinations at RIFS and the regional forensic laboratories by developing and expanding them.
