Preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence

The project aims at strengthening the capacity of the Judiciary, law enforcement and administration to implement more effectively the established standards for protection and institutional practices for prevention and counteraction to domestic and gender-based violence (DGBV). The set of activities is aimed at enhancement of the competences of the Judiciary and the competent authorities to implement a victim-centered approach and to improve the institutional cooperation in preventing and combating DGBV. The project activities are consistent with the Justice Programme's objective for strengthening the rule of law and contribute to the achievement of the Programme's outcome for ensuring the improved capacity of Bulgarian authorities in the DGBV-area. The project builds on the results of the pre-defined project (PDP) "Improvement of the national framework to bring it in line with Council of Europe (CoE) standards and strengthening the capacity of competent institutions involved in cases of GBV, including domestic violence" implemented within the previous programming period and will be carried out in close coordination with the National Legal Aid Bureau (NLAB) as regards the project activity focused on evaluation of the pilot local cooperation mechanism on DGBV, established by NLAB. The Bulgarian Ministry of Justice will be NIJ project partner as a leading institution, implementing the activity on evaluation of the local cooperation mechanism, launched under the NLAB project. The main project target groups are legal and other professionals working in the field of justice (magistrates, candidates for junior magistrates, court staff, lawyers, etc.), law enforcement officials, experts to Bulgarian authorities in charge of preventing and combating DGBV.
